Argentique

your archive,
offline.

You've left the network, or you're about to. What's left is a .zip file of several gigabytes that nothing really opens. Argentique reads it on your phone and gives you back your feed, your conversations, your stories, your profile and your contacts, just as you left them.

Argentique isn't published yet. It works, and it's being prepared for Google Play. Before allowing publication, Google requires twelve people to use it for fourteen days in a row.

You'll need an Android phone and your own data export. Request it now from the platform: delivery takes anywhere from a few hours to several days, which is what costs a week to people who think of it on installation day.

Testers keep full access to the paid content after release.

no data leaves

The published build is compiled without android.permission.INTERNET. Android then denies every connection at the kernel level, including to a third-party library I didn't write. The permission doesn't exist in the binary, so there is nothing to switch off and nothing to work around.

There is no server, no account, no analytics and no advertising. Your archive stays where it is: Argentique reads the original .zip without copying it and without modifying it.

$ aapt2 dump permissions argentique-release.apk package: com.argentique.app uses-permission: com.android.vending.BILLING # android.permission.INTERNET: absent # android.permission.SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW: absent

Download the APK and run the command yourself. The development build keeps the permission, because the development server needs it to send the code to the device. Both come from the same source.

what you get back

everything the export holds

  • Your feed

In order, with the captions of the time and the carousels.

  • Your conversations

Text, photos, videos, voice messages, shares and reactions.

  • Your stories and profile

Including what the platform kept and never showed you.

  • Real search

Across captions, message contents and usernames.

pick a month.
the whole app folds into it.

Posts, stories, conversations and even the contents of each thread filter down to the month you chose. The interface takes on the colours that year had, in light or dark.

The picker only offers years present in your archive, and marks with a dot the months you posted in. Many archives only cover a handful of months, which is worth knowing before you go looking.

the retrospective

your retrospective,
computed on your phone

Year-in-review features are computed on the platform's servers. This one is computed on your device, from a file you downloaded.

Year by year or across the whole archive: the person you wrote to most, the accounts you've followed since the beginning, the date of your first message, the hour you actually wrote at, the rich conversations that went quiet.

Every card can be shared as an image. A switch replaces other people's first names with their initial before the image leaves the phone, because those names belong to people who never asked for any of this.

what Argentique cannot do

  • The export only contains what you did. Likes received, views on your stories and comments people left you are not in it. No app can bring those back.
  • It isn't a backup. Argentique reads your files without replacing them. Keep your .zip archives somewhere.
  • Depth depends on the export. Some go back to the creation of the account, others start much later. The app shows what it received.
  • Android only for this first release.
